U.S. Bishops, Voting and Abortion

As we have just seen so many pro-abortion people be voted into office, and as I have seen so many totally ambiguous voting guides (one great one though is by Catholic Answers: The Voting Guide for Serious Catholics, available at www.catholic.com), and as I am frustrated, to say the least, with the way the U.S. bishops are doing things, I would like to comment on a certain statement made in the past day or so. But first my comments on it:

If only they (the bishops) would say the same thing, but replace “torture” with abortion (and in fact abortion does torture the baby, always, and the mother as well—so how can he say end all torture?—he does not mean end all torture, he means end all torture against born people), but they will not, because if you say “end all torture”, meaning people who have been born, it sounds great and like you are doing some wondrous thing to so soundly condemn it (and most people do, so no one is going to say anything against him), but if they, the U.S. bishops, were to replace the word “torture” with “abortion” people would not be applauding them all around, but would be trying to discount them, calling them names like “intolerant” or “fanatic”, and they won’t do it, because they won’t put themselves out for things that matter greatly, and abortion matters more than the torture he is talking about, because—well, need I even say why? This country has lost its soul already, and it is because of abortion, the murder of 1.5 million babies every year for the last 40 years. And if anything will cause the legal torture of suspected terrorists, etc, it is abortion, because abortion teaches us to use any violence to get what we want. Want to stop the torture he speaks of, want to stop the violence and death and immorality that is destroying this country? Destroying abortion is a really good place to start…that and sound, orthodox catechesis for Catholics and those in RCIA classes. Let us pray for our bishops and priests for courage and holiness. Here is the statement of which I speak...

"Bishop William Skylstad of Spokane, president of the U.S. bishops' conference, joined other religious leaders in signing a joint statement entitled "Torture Is a Moral Issue," promoted by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.
The text reads: "Torture violates the basic dignity of the human person that all religions, in their highest ideals, hold dear.
It degrades everyone involved -- policymakers, perpetrators and victims. It contradicts our nation's most cherished values."
"Any policies that permit torture and inhumane treatment are shocking and morally intolerable. Nothing less is at stake in the torture abuse crisis than the soul of our nation," the statement continues.
The statement added: "What does it signify if torture is condemned in word but allowed in deed? Let America abolish torture now -- without exceptions."
